The 2012 MBP is actually significantly snappier than the iMac which is 5 years younger, but has an internal HDD. I have an iMac and PC gaming rig in addition to the laptop, so for my particular use case it serves me very well. However, I would only suggest it if you don't need a laptop for anything that taxes the GPU or gaming purposes. That 2012 is still my daily laptop and the SSD makes it feel snappier than ever. I finally had to replace it around 2019 due to a screen crack, but I opted for a used 2012 MBP rather than a new model for the reason that it's the last fully upgradable model. My first macbook was a late 2008 that lasted me throughout college + an extra 4 years after upgrading the HDD to a SDD and adding RAM.
This post is 4 months old at this point, but FWIW I wholeheartedly think a 2012 MBP w/ SSD upgrade is still usable today.
